수박

여름 햇살이
불화살 쏟아지듯
뜨겁게 내리쬐어
땅바닥이 쪼개지고
바싹 태워지지만

줄지어 늘어선
큼지막한 수박들은
초록 옷을 두르고
싱그럽고 탐스러운 몸매를 자랑하며
땅 여기저기로 덩굴을 뻗으면서
그늘을 드리웁니다

매끄럽고 단단한 껍질 속에
숨겨진 붉은 속살은
달콤한 향기 풍기며
그윽한 즙 뚝뚝 떨어뜨려,
입안 가득 맑은 샘물 넘치듯 퍼지며
타는 갈증 단숨에 꺼지고
온몸에 서늘한 기운 번집니다

펄펄 끓는 메마른 대지에서
땀 흘리는 이들을 위해
상쾌한 즙 넘치는 과일을 만드신 이여,
심신이 지치고 목마른 자들에게
단비 같은 위로를 내려주소서

Watermelon

Summer sunlight
Pours down like fiery arrows,
Scorching the earth,
Splitting the ground apart,
Burning it dry—

Yet lined up in rows,
Large watermelons
Wrapped in green robes
Proudly show off their fresh, plump bodies,
Sending vines crawling across the soil,
Casting their shade.

Beneath the smooth, firm rind,
The hidden crimson flesh
Gives off a sweet fragrance,
Drops of deep juice falling slowly,
Filling the mouth like a spring overflowing,
Quenching blazing thirst in an instant,
And a cool rush spreads through the body.

O Maker of the fresh, juice-laden fruit,
In the parched, seething land,
For those who sweat under the blazing sun—
Send down Your rain-like comfort
To souls weary and thirsting.
