불씨를 지키는 사랑

사랑이라는 말이
온갖 반짝이는 옷을 입고
화면 속에서 춤추지만
거리 끝 어두운 창가에선
텅 빈 눈망울이 하루를 견딘다

아프리카의 땅에선
배를 움켜쥔 아이들이 울고
이스라엘과 팔레스타인 하늘 아래에선
붉은 연기와 총성이
사람들을 어둠 속으로 몰아넣는다

사랑은, 병든 이의 곁에 앉아
이마 위 땀을 닦아주는 손길일까?
혹은 말 대신 고요히
그 눈물에 젖는 마음일까?

길을 잃은 이 곁에
작은 등불을 켜고
흔들리는 불빛 속에서
희망의 길을 더듬으며
차가운 바람을 마주 서는 일이리라

우리가 따뜻한 국 한 그릇을 건네고
마른 손을 부드럽게 잡아주며
외로운 이의 이야기를 들어줄 때,
사랑은 조용히 뿌리내리고
누군가의 불씨가 되리라

Love That Keeps the Ember Alive

The word love
Wears all kinds of shining clothes
And dances on the screen,
But by a dark window at the street’s end,
Empty eyes endure the day.

On the land of Africa,
Children clutching their bellies cry,
And under the skies of Israel and Palestine,
Red smoke and gunfire
Drive people into darkness.

Is love sitting beside the sick,
A hand wiping sweat from their brow?
Or a heart that quietly,
Without words, soaks in their tears?

Beside the lost,
Lighting a small lamp,
In the trembling glow,
Feeling out the path of hope,
And standing against the cold wind—

When we hand over a warm bowl of soup,
Gently hold a dry hand,
Listen to the lonely one’s story,
Love quietly takes root
And will become someone's ember.
